Guide du Sénégal

La pêche au pays des lébous

Off shore fishing
It mainly concerns Dakar, the Petite Côte and to a lesser extent St. Louis, Sine Saloum and Casamance and is mainly for whole sale or semi whole sale. Several fishing centers with or without accommodation are hyper-equipped to take your conquer the blue marlin, shark or sailfish. In the north (La Petite Côte Saint-Louis) differences in water temperature between the seasons are very important in contrast to the Casamance and the Sine Saloum. Thus, you must choose the right time to leave depending on the type of fish you want. the blue marlins are most likely to be caught in Senegalese waters  in winter periods (May-June and October, November). It is common to have samples of 150kg. It is quite the contrary for the magnificent sailfish, and so much better because his catch is complementary to the marlin. It’s in the rainy season they abound (from late June to late September). The fondest memories and most beautiful pictures of sea will be accompanied by the ocean D'Artagnan. The rest of the year, including the "cold", season also brings its part of fine catches, but in semi whole sale.
At the bottom fishing or trolling you will catch many tuna (they are particularly numerous in Dakar), grouper, trout, sea kingfish, red carp (delicious!) Of croaker, dorado...
The surf casting is practiced particularly in the Petite Côte (in Rufisque, in Joal through Sally). However, swimmers and more generally walkers on the beach make this type of fishing not popular. Fishing  will start in the ideal zone of the rocky peninsula of Cap Vert (Ngor, Ouakam, Yoff) with numerous sea trouts

River Fishing
Anecdotal and not organized in Senegal it will still get some nice feelings in eastern Senegal (in the Gambia River, and in Niokolo Faleme) and in the Senegal River Valley. Very few species are interesting and 80% of the catches are species of small perch inedible stuffed with edges. Aficionados of freshwater fishing will be those who evolve in wildest landscapes and least touristic country. You’ll be equipped with your usual European predator material because you will not catch by the gigantic and legendary Nile Perch.
But nice fights are at rendez vous with hydro cypress (local brochets) and beautiful catfish (very popular when grilled). Be careful not to confuse them with malaptérure which also invade the rivers in the area and which also resemble the catfish. The big difference is that the sympathetic malaptérure will send you discharge of 500 volts that will make you reload the pacemaker and keel over. Take care not to confuse. The fishing not being practiced in the region, fish are distributed uniformly. There is no "bad area".

Fishing in mangrove
it is specialty of the Sine Saloum and the Casamance only because so great is and rare is this ecosystem with its brackish water and mangrove islands. The species inhabiting these waters are numerous and varied, and unlike sea fishing, there is no season for fishing in mangrove although the density of fish is more important during the rainy season. Most hotels in the Sine Saloum and Casamance offer their customers trolling and bottom fishing through the mangrove. Most of these fish parties held on large motorized Senegalese canoes. but some hotels are really equipped with real modern boats for this activity. The guides will take you through the maze of mangrove to access sites that are most conducive to good catches.
